In [[neuroscience]], a &#039;&#039;&#039;population vector&#039;&#039;&#039; is the sum of the preferred directions of a population of [[neuron]]s, weighted by the respective spike counts.&lt;br /&gt;

The formula for computing the (normalized) population vector, &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;F&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;, takes the following form:&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;lt;math&amp;gt;F = \frac{\sum_j m_j F_j}{\sum_j m_j}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Where &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;m_j&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; is the activity of cell &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;j&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;, and &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;F_j&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; is the preferred input for cell &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;j&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Note that the vector &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;F&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; encodes the input direction, &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;F_j&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;, in terms of the activation of a population of neurons.&lt;br /&gt;
