    Summary

    Description
English: Two example runs of the Davis-Putnam procedure.

Left: The formula (a∨b∨c)∧(b∨¬c∨¬f)∧(¬b∨e) is satisfiable: starting from the given formula (top row), resolving each possible clause pair on the variable b yields the middle row, then resolving each pair on c yields the bottom row a∨e∨¬f. Since no further resolution steps are possible, the algorithm stops; since the empty clause couldn't be derived, the result is "satisfiable". In fact, instantiating e.g. a=b=e=𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒 will make the original formula 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒.

Right: The formula (a∨b)∧(a∨¬b)∧(¬a∨c)∧(¬a∨¬c) is unsatisfiable: starting from the given formula (top row), resolving all pairs on b, then on a, then on c yields the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th row from above, respectively. Since the latter is the empty clause, the algorithm halts with result "unsatisfiable". In fact, each row is a consequence of the row above it, and the bottom row denotes 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑒, which certainly cannot be satisfied.

This tree diagram image could be re-created using vector graphics as a SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If a SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
It is recommended to name the SVG file “Resolution.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
